Here one can learn more about the story of the movie or better said the Half Nelson Nelson is a movie follows the life of a young middle school teacher, Dan Dunne (Ryan Gosling) and the relationship that he develops with one of his students. He is in fact a history teacher in a Brooklyn school but he is one of the teachers whom adopt a different approach to teaching and whom disapprove of the traditional curricula. Dan’s goal is to teach his students ,most of them coming from vulnerable parts of the society, how change can work for them, and how they can apply what they learn in school to their daily lives. Nevertheless, he shows his students why it is important that they think for themselves and have their own is clever and dynamic and yet he is an individual who, unlike many other teachers, can keep his classroom under control. Although he may seem the perfect role model in class, Dan is a drug addict and spends most of his free time snoring cocaine. One day, Drey, one of his students and a basketball player catches him when he is doing drugs in the locker room. Dan seems to have lived surrounded by troubled individuals. His former girlfriend, Rachel was also a drug addict but she had successfully gone through rehab. His family was also fissured. However, these do not necessarily seem to be the reasons why Dan was a drug addict and the true reasons are not given. On the other hand, the troubles in Drey’s life are more clearly pictured. She also comes from a broken family with divorced parents and a very detached father. Her brother was a drug seller and her mother worked constantly as a medical technician. The tension throughout the movie arises from Drey’s attempts to save Dan from his drug habit and Dan’s efforts to prevent Drey from becoming just like her
